Windass scored opener
Windass had the ball in the back of the net in the 9th minute but
the referee had already blown for offside whilst the first legitimate
shot on target came from United but Sam Hewson's strike was comfortably
taken by Matt Duke.
Windass was in the thick of the action as he saw a header from a France cross deflected just wide of the post and then when his volley was blocked Will Atkinson's shot was diverted over the bar.
The assistant referee's flag again denied City in the 22nd minute as Stelios Giannakopoulos stabbed in at the far post before Nicky Featherstone's cross was met on the volley by Windass and United keeper Ron-Robert Zieler produced a good save low to his right.
Giannakopoulos had a great chance to open the scoring when Hughes' free kick picked him out at the far post but he headed over and the final chance of the half went United's way but Hewson's shot was gathered by Duke.

The second half began with a couple of chances for the visitors but Antonio Bryan shot well wide and James Derbyshire's shot provided Duke with an easy catch.
City broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Windass found Giannakopoulos out on the left and when he crossed the veteran striker had continued his run into the box to head over Zieler and into the net.
The visitors were almost level within two minutes as Macheda weaved his way into the City box but from just six yards Duke somehow managed to turn his right foot strike over the bar.
Matt Plummer then broke out of defence for City and fed Windass out on the right who amazingly almost scored from somewhere near the corner flag, Zieler just about scrambling the ball clear at his near post.
However, the Tigers did double their lead in the 65th minute from a quickly taken Atkinson throw in. He found France who then raced into the box to meet Giannakopoulos' superb chipped return to fire a right foot shot past Zieler.
It was almost three just a minute later but Hughes glanced a header wide and then Zieler had to save a France header from Hughes' free kick.
Windass wasn't to be kept out of the action for long and his free kick was top corner bound until a flying fingertip save from Zieler tipped it over the bar.
United too had their chances and after a break down the right Macheda beat Duke but Plummer was perfectly positioned to clear off the line.
Hewson had a free kick deflected over the bar and Duke produced a good save to deny substitute Petrucci.
As the game entered stoppage time Bill Law got on the end of a Hughes cross but his header landed on the roof of the net and it was not until the third minute of added on time that United reduced the deficit.
Cameron Stewart's right foot strike from outside the box took a deflection off France that deceived Duke and nestled in the corner of the net.
However, it was too little, too late, as City had only a matter of seconds to hold on and secure their first win of the season.
