Another fightback earns Pools Cup trip to seaside

Gary Liddle - winner
By Clarence Rode
November 19 2008
Another of their trademark fightbacks earned Hartlepool an FA Cup second round trip to non-League Fleetwood Town, who beat a team nobody's ever heard of 2-0 in their own replay. A goal down at half-time, Pools came back well in the second half and probably deserved their win, even though their equalizing penalty was probably a bit controversial.

Porter whiteTheir first-half display was in fact p*** poor, but they got better in the second and Joel Porter (right) scored from the spot four minutes before Gary Liddle celebrated his return to the team by slamming in the winner.
With Sam Collins suspended and on-loan Kevin Kyle unable to play, James Brown played up front alongside Porter, Ben Clark dropped back to partner Michael Nelson in defence, and Liddle took over from Clark in midfield.
Andy Monkhouse was dropped to the bench, and David Foley and Matty Robson were the two wide men in a much-changed team from the side robbed by a red card at home to MK Dons on Saturday.
There were good performances from Robson, Antony Sweeney, Porter (again), Nelson and Clark.
But i
t wasn't a classic win or a classic game, but it was good enough and now Pools go to Fleetwood, who beat Leiston 2-0 in their replay. Fleetwood (known as the Cod Army) play in Blue square North, but they are not doing well, lying near the bottom of the table after a poor start to their season.
However, they are onto their second manager of the season and things are beginning to look up - this is the first time in their history they have been in round two.
But Pools boss Danny Wilson says his team won't be treating Fleetwood (it's near Blackpool, by the way, and we think they make Fisherman's Friends there) lightly.
The game has a 2pm kick-off (their lights are supposed to be OK, thoiugh, and while we're on the subject Pools' alleged lights aren't exactly brilliant are they?) a week on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Pools go Leeds this weekend, with Kyle and Collins available again.
